Understanding

Updated: Aug 27, 2021

Sometimes when I am reading Scripture, I do not understand what I am reading. Sometimes I understand what I am reading, but only because I have studied it with someone who knows more than I do and they explained it to me. Sometimes the meaning of the Scripture passage is easy for me, but not for someone else.

One day, when I was reading a particularly confusing Scripture passage, I was very frustrated. I understood the passage because it had been explained to me before, so lack of understanding wasn't my frustration. I complained to our Lord: "If You spoke in a way that was less confusing then more people would understand what You are saying and believe in You." Then Jesus said to me, "Do not worry."

In that instant, Jesus gave me the understanding of what He meant by 'Do not worry.' This is understanding He gave me: When we read Scripture, Jesus reveals Himself to us in our hearts. We hear with our minds as we read and our hearts receive the understanding as Jesus reveals it to us. Understanding comes from our Lord, not from ourselves. Jesus gives us what we need to know and when we need to know it. Believing is a gift from Him.

Prayer: Everything we do that is good comes from You, Oh, Lord. All that we accomplish is through Your power. Lord, draw us to Yourself. Help us to love You. Our loving God, Praise You!
